Renovating the colour of a garage door: when is repainting necessary?

After 10 to 15 years of use, it is not uncommon for a garage door to remain perfectly functional while having lost some of its original appearance.
This is particularly the case when the door is exposed daily to sunlight, rain and temperature fluctuations. Over time, the colour may become dull, fade or develop an uneven appearance.
An alternative to replacing the door
In some cases, it is not necessary to replace a garage door simply because its colour has deteriorated.
We recently renovated the colour of two up-and-over garage doors that had been installed around twenty years ago. Originally painted in RAL 7023 (Concrete Grey), the doors were still functioning very well mechanically, but their colour had lost some of its original appearance over the years.

After preparation and treatment with products specifically recommended by Hörmann for surface renovation, we were able to restore an appearance much closer to the original colour.
The result is particularly noticeable when compared with the colour sample: the renovated surface has regained a uniform colour that is significantly closer to the original shade.
Renovate rather than replace

Before considering replacing an ageing garage door, renovating its finish can therefore be an interesting alternative, provided that the door is still in good mechanical condition and its surface is suitable for renovation.
Every garage door is different. We can therefore advise you on the most suitable solution depending on its condition, material and finish.
